Q. How long have you been a member and who first introduced you to Rotary?
I joined the club in November 1982 at the suggestion of my first boss Gary Stein, who had been a member. I was actually introduced to the club and came to a meeting more than 10 years earlier when I was in high school. I had no idea what Rotary was about and it was a strange experience for me -- during a time of youthful rebellion--to have lunch with these patriotic-song-singing, intimidating looking old guys.
Q. What most appealed to you about Rotary ?
Nothing at first. Gradually, I got to know people in the club, and especially people who joined at about the time I did: Lloyd Astmann, Joe Masciandaro, Chip Philobosian, Emil Geering and a little later, Marty Diamond and Ray Hough. I’ve subsequently gotten to know many more great people in our club. It’s the people in the club who make Rotary what it is.
Q. What positions have you held? Or what committees have you worked on?
I was a Board member in the mid-eighties. I was the committee chair at the time the PHS Interact Club was founded and the first liaison between our club and the Interact Club. I also chaired the Scholarship Committee. More recently, I have been an officer and ultimately, President.
Q. Was your involvement gradual or did you plunge in right from the start?
More like fits and starts. I got on the Board early on and was very active in Interact and Scholarships. As the demands of my family and law practice increased, I got less involved and my attendance was less than exemplary. I was able to devote more time to Rotary as my children got older (remarkably, my wife, Carol, did not age at all) and my professional life progressed. So I maintained my membership during a time when I was not very active because of the many friendships I had made and then got more active as my circumstances allowed.
Q. What business are/ have you been involved in?
I have been a practicing attorney in the area since 1979. I have been a member of the firm of Pashman Stein, P.C. since 2003.
Q. Are you involved with any other organizations?
I have been a board member and President of a number of charitable and civil organizations over the years. Right now, I serve on a committee helping to rewrite my town’s zoning ordinances.
Q. What are your hobbies/interests? How do you spend your free time?
I am a sports fan and have spent a lot of time going to my sons’ games, coaching and fundraising for youth sports. Now that my son Greg has played in his last college football game, I need a new hobby.
Q. What town to you live in?
River Vale.
Q. Any family members you’d like to mention?
First and foremost, my wife Carol. I’d be nowhere without her -- just ask her! All kidding aside, she was a tremendous help to me last year when I was President. I have two kids, Matt and Greg, who turned out great, mostly because of their mother who works full time as an Admissions Coordinator at a nursing home, in addition to being the strength of our family. Matt will be graduating from NYU Law School this year and will start work as an associate at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City. Greg will graduate from Lafayette College this coming year with a degree in economics and business and look for a job in the financial industry. Of all things in my life, I am most proud of my family.
Q. What keeps you coming back year after year and what means the most to you about Rotary?
The great people in the club and the wonderful work we do. Plus, it’s a good lunch.
Q. Anything you’d like to add?
To keep the club vibrant and relevant, we need the meaningful participation of new members. Get involved in at least one committee. Come to a Board meeting. Come to our events. Have fun at Rotary!
